Education Program Overview

Education Program launch at 2003 Melbourne Motor Show

  • LAUNCHING – NEW ITALIAN LANGUAGE EDUCATION PROGRAM
  • Select our “Education Program” button on our home page for further details and how to book.

  • Al volante Education Program Visit
Al volante (At the wheel) is a collection of Italian activities for teachers and students. This resource contains suggested pre and post visit activities and activities students can complete while on a visit to the Fox Classic Car Collection. The Al volante resource has been created for the Early, Middle and Later Years Italian classroom and is based on Lindsay Fox’s Classic Car Collection

  • The aim of the Al volante program is to provide teachers and students with a focus on the world of automobiles and to provide a stimulus for using the Italian language. Students can consider how different materials are used for different purposes, explore and observe variations in manufacture, consider the development of automobiles within our society along with trends and stories attached some vehicles.
  • The program can form part of a longer unit of work, which can include visits to other partners in the automotive industry and link in with alternative science and technology programs. Al volante can also link with SOSE, the Visual Arts and English curriculum areas as part of an integrated unit of work.
In addition, the visit could be one aspect of an introduction to the exciting and developing Docklands precinct. We have a grassed parkland area directly behind our building with toilet amenities (5 min walk). Interactive play structures have been installed along with toilets, solar B-B-Q's & a picnic area. The city tourist tram stop is also adjacent to this area.
  • Format
Teachers and supervisors will be required to undertake the Al volante Classic Car tour in the Queen’s Warehouse independently of Fox Collection staff. The tour activity is best suited to smaller supervised teams of up to 10 students working through their activity sheets together with their supervisor.
  • Our staff will provide a short introduction upon arrival, after which the smaller groups will be directed to the appropriate area to commence the chosen Al volante activity sheets.
  • Duration of visit with activity would be approximately 1 1/2 hours.

To make a booking, complete an Expression of Interest form and fax to the Fox Classic Car Collection. Teachers will be contacted directly by email or phone to make further arrangements.

  • INTRODUCTION

Fox Collection Education uses the automotive industry and an exciting visit to the Fox Car Collection to introduce students to the Technology Curriculum. Directed at upper primary levels, the program will enable students to consider how different materials are used for different purposes. They will be introduced to working safely and cooperatively as well as developing sequences for manufacturing processes. The Education Program addresses Level 4 of the Victorian Technology CSF in the Materials Strand.

The program assists students to consider the uses and properties of common materials through examining food packaging – an area that students will have familiarity with. Then, testing and identifying the nature of the different identified materials, students consider their suitability for other uses and the way they are used in both manufacturing and in the automotive trade.

A visit to the Fox Collection reinforces this learning. Students can view the collection with a structured activity sheet and participate in building working cars on the miniature assembly line. Students are encouraged to develop a cooperative system of working together as well as adhering to safety requirements to ensure workplace safety in a mini automotive workshop environment.

Back at school, students follow up by reviewing the visit, considering the need for workplace safety and the methods used to ensure safety. They can transfer their knowledge to use computer technology and draw flow charts to represent assembly processes. Students are able to consider how materials influence form and design in manufacturing.

The program can form part of a longer unit of work, which could include visits to other partners in the automotive industry. It can also be integrated into many curriculum areas.

In addition the visitation could be one aspect of an introduction to the exciting and developing Docklands precinct.

  • OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM
  • To address Level 4 of the Materials strand in the Technology CSF II
  • To introduce materials in the context of the Automotive trade
  • To introduce students to a range of materials used in manufacturing
  • For students to conduct tests and observations to identify the properties and characteristics of these materials
  • For students to gain an understanding of the uses for modern materials in manufacturing
  • For students to gain an understanding of the importance of safety systems and equipment when working with materials and in daily life

To experience and work within co-operative work teams in a production-line situation.

  • PROGRAM MATERIALS

It is anticipated that teacher notes and students worksheets will be available from our website. Schools will be able to download and copy the worksheets for their students.

The program requires teachers and students to undertake the pre visit activities to ensure students arrive for their visit with some basic knowledge of the materials used for making vehicles. They will need to have some basic knowledge of the terminology will be used during the visit, i.e. parts of cars and some tools they will be using. Therefore the pre-visit research is an important building block for the program.

As the program develops additional material will be offered on our website. Ideas from teachers and students will be utilised to enrich the program and develop activities.

Teachers will need to ensure students arrive for the visit with the required worksheets.

  • THE VISIT

The Fox Collection visit requires 1 adult per 5 children supervision ratio for the visitation. For safety of visitors and vehicles, students will require close supervision in both the workshop area and the Queen’s Warehouse where the vehicles are located.

We can currently accommodate up to 40 visitors. We have a grassed area where groups can have their lunch. There are no food amenities within close walking range. Arrangements can be made for a sheltered area to be available during inclement weather.

The visit takes in two buildings. One is the historic two storey Queen’s Warehouse where the car collection is housed. The second is the Technical Centre/ Workshop where the mini car assembly takes place.

Disability access to the first floor of the Queens Warehouse is currently unavailable. However there is ramp access to ground floor of the warehouse where some of the vehicles can be viewed. First floor access to view the remainder of the car collection is by staircase only.

Due to the ongoing maintenance program of vehicles there may be times when some cars of particular interest are not exhibited.

There is ample space for bus and car parking. We are located ideally for access by public transport.

We anticipate the duration of the visit would be 2-3 hours.

  • MAKING ARRANGMENTS TO VISIT

To express an interest in undertaking the education program, simply print out the Expression of Interest form, complete your details and fax to us.

We will contact you to discuss your visit and make suitable arrangements.

As our Technical Centre / Workshop undertakes ongoing maintenance of the collection vehicles, we will need to arrange school visits around the demands of both school and workshop schedules.

We anticipate we will be able to accommodate the needs of most school groups. However this is very dependent on the amount of interest expressed by schools.
